Events listed in the CONDENSED RULES below that have rule changes for 2017 are marked with the event titles shown in green. For detailed rule changes click on FULL OFFICIAL RULES above.

Badminton: USA Badminton Federation Rules with exceptions. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles in 10- year age groups. Double elimination or round robin depending on number of participants.Players supply their own racquets. Event Host supplies shuttlecocks.

Basketball - 3 ON 3 (Men): 10473324_664612176954931_4984399824249807607_oNCAA Rules with exceptions. 10-year age groups depending on the number of teams. The youngest player on team determines the age bracket. Games consist of two 12-minute running time halves.NVSO supplies basketballs. 

Basketball - Free Throw: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. Four rounds of five free throws each. Most successful throws out of 20 determines the winner. NVSO supplies basketballs.

Basketball - Field Goals: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. Four shots are taken from each of five locations on the court. Most successful throws of 20 shots determines the winner. NVSO supplies basketballs.

Bocce: Official Bocce Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. 14352509_10207087116158933_6739551954917915858_oMatches are two out of three games to 12 points. Single elimination tournament. Event Host supplies bocce balls.

Bowling - Ten Pin: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Three games will be bowled by each contestant. Winners will be determined by total pinfall plus handicap (90% of difference between 200 and bowler’s average). If average cannot be ascertained, it will be assigned 150 for men and 135 for women. Competitors may use their own bowling ball.

Bowling - Wii: Nintendo’s Video Interactive Game. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Three games will be bowled by each contestant. Winners will be determined by total pinfall. Event Host supplies equipment.

Bridge - Duplicate: Contract Duplicate Bridge Laws by the American Contract Bridge League. No separate age groups or gender divisions. NVSO supplies the playing and scoring cards.

Bunco: Official Bunco Rules. No separate age groups or gender divisions. The Event Host supplies the equipment.

Cornhole Game: Official ACO Rules. Men’s and Women’s Single, Mens’ Double, Women’s Double and Mixed Double with no age groups. This is a double elimination tournament. Each game is played to 15 points with a 2 point spread. A one round losers bracket determines 3rd place. Event host supplies the cornhole boards and bags.

Cribbage: No separate age groups or gender divisions. Five games - no muggins (no pegging of missed points by opponents). Scoring: 2 points for win, 0 points for loss and 3 points for a skunk. Tie breakers based on winning/losing point margins. NVSO supplies boards and playing cards.

Cycling: USA Cycling Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. 10K Time Trial and 20K Time Trial. Winner will be declared according to best times in each division and age group. Participants furnish their own multi-gear bikes. Front and rear brakes are required. Fixed gear bicycles are not permitted. Recumbent bikes that meet USCF rules are permitted.

Diving: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. 50-54 and 55-59 age groups: 11128680_804605899622224_1441711759461521913_o6 dives; 60-64 and 65-69 age groups: 5 dives; 70-74 age groups and up: 4 dives. All age groups: Any dive from any groups in the FINA Dive Handbook and other groups of dives listed in the Full Rules.

Dominoes - Mexican Train: Rules by Roy & Katie Parsons © 1994, copyrighted by Puremco, Inc. in 2005. No separate age groups or gender divisions. Be the first to play all of your dominoes, or at least as many high-point dominoes as possible, in each round. The lowest total score at the end of all rounds wins the game. NVSO supplies the dominoes.

Eight Ball Pool: Current BCA Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. Single elimination tournament. Players call each shot, except women. A match consists of best two out of three games. A one round losers bracket will determine 3rd place. Participants may use their own pool cue.

Football Throw: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year groups. Throws are judged on distance and accuracy. Best of three attempts. NVSO supplies footballs.

Frisbee Throw: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Throws are judged on distance and accuracy. Best of three attempts. NVSO supplies Standard Frisbees.

Golf: United States Golf Association (USGA) Rules. Singles competition. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. No handicap rules, no “gimmies”. Medals will be awarded based on the low gross score reported. Players must supply their own clubs and balls.

Handball: Official US Handball Association Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Matches are two out of three games. Games 1 and 2 are played to 21 points. If both players win a game, a tiebreaker is played to 11 points. Competitors provide their own gloves and must wear eye guards. NVSO supplies balls.

Horseshoes: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. Pitching Distance: Men age 50-69, 40 feet; Men age 70+, 30 feet; Women age 50-69, 30 feet; Women age 70+, 20 feet. Single Elimination Tournament. Best two out of three games. All games are played to 21 points with all points counting or 40 total shoes (30 shoes age 70+) whichever occurs first. Event Host supplies the horseshoes.

Mah Jongg: No age groups or gender divisions. North American Mah Jongg Federation Rules (NAMF). Four players per table with “East” participant as the scorekeeper. After each round new players come to the table. Winner receives points shown on the card. Winner selecting card receives double points. Win without joker gets double points. Win with card selected and no joker gets quadruple points. If no winner everyone gets 10 points. If time is up before last game is completed, everyone gets 5 points. Players supply 2016 Mah Jongg card. NVSO provides Mah Jongg tiles and tables.

Miniature Golf: Singles competition in 18-hole tournament. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Lowest score wins. Ties will be broken by using scorecards or play off. Event Host supplies clubs and balls.

Nine Ball Pool: Current BCA Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10 year Age groups. This is a single elimination tournament. A match consists of best three out of five games. A one round losers bracket will determine 3rd place. Participants may use their own pool cues.

Orienteering: Men’s and women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups for Beginner Course (1 to 2.5 Kilometers) and Advanced Course (4 Kilometers). US Orienteering Federation Rules with modifications apply. GPS with visual displays are not permitted. Event Host will supply orienteering maps, epunches (electronic timing devices) and compasses. For questions call (703) 987-9070.

Pickleball: Single Elimination Tournament. Men’s and Women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles in 10-year age groups. The game is played to 11 points. Matches are two out of three games. Bronze medal match is one game to 15 points. Players supply their own paddle. NVSO supplies balls.

Racquetball: Official USA Racquetball Rules. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Matches are 2 out of 3 games. Games 1 and 2 are 15 points, tie breaker is 11 points.All players must wear lensed eye guards designed for racquet sports. Players supply their own racquet. NVSO supplies balls.

Rapid Chess: (Trial Event - New for 2017) No age groups or gender divisions, except 10 year age groups if more than 7 players. Standard US Chess Federation Rules apply. 3-5 games in a round robin format. 10 or 15 minutes plus 2 seconds per game to make all moves, dependent on the number of participants. Scoring: Win =1 point, draw = .5 points, loss = 0 points. Tie-breaks apply. NVSO supplies chess boards, chess pieces and chess clocks.

Rowing – ERG (Ergonomic): Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Individual time trials “covering” 2,000 meters in the shortest time. Event Host provides Concept3/Model PM3 or PM4 rowing machines.

Rummikub: No age groups or gender divisions, except if more than 16 players, there will be 3 age groups. Rummy based tile game using standard Pressman Rummikub rules for 3-4 players, except with one minute time limits on player turns and 10 second warnings. Winners of qualifying games meet for championship game to determine medals. NVSO supplies the tiles and stop watches.

Scrabble: No age groups or gender divisions. Official Game Rules and the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, Fifth Edition. Three 2-player 50- minute games. Game Three is King-of-the-Hill. Winners determined by win-loss ratio. Ties broken by cumulative point spread. Event Host supplies the boards and the tiles.

Softball Hit: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. Ball hit Fungo style or from an optional tee. Best of three attempts. NVSO supplies softballs and bats.

Spelling Bee: (DISCONTINUED)

Sudoku: 10-year age groups with no gender divisions. Solve 5 standard 9x9 puzzles with increasing difficulty making the fewest errors in the shortest total time. One minute penalty for mistakes. NVSO supplies the logic puzzles and pencils.

Swimming: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. USMS Masters Rules apply. Best times in freestyle, breaststroke and back stroke for 50 and 100 yards, and 1⁄2 mile in any style. 100 yard start is off the starting blocks, edge of the pool, or in the water. 50 yard and 1⁄2 mile start is in the water. Two competitors may be assigned per lane in the 1/2mile swim, depending on the number of entrants.

Table Tennis: Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 10-year age groups. 1097838_689414251141390_5358597231982019058_oBest 3 out of 5 games wins set. 11-point games, win by two. Alternate serve at 10-all. Single elimination tournament.Players supply their own paddles, not backed by sand paper. NVSO supplies regulation tables, nets, and balls.

Tennis: Single elimination tournament. Men’s and women’s singles and doubles in 10-year age groups. An 8 game pro-set with the first one to win 8 games named the winner. When the score is tied at 7 all, a tie break will be played. Player/pair who wins 7 points with a margin of 2 points wins the match. Each player supplies his own racquet and a can of new balls for each event entered.

Track & Field: All events are in Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 5-year age groups. USA Track and Field Association and Amateur Athletic Union of the United States Rules apply, except as noted otherwise herein.

1) Track Events - Indoors.  No spikes are allowed.

    Running Events: 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1600 meters, individually timed. False starts in the 60m, 200m, and 400 m will be called.

    Walking Events: Walkers must walk, not jog or run. 400 meters, 800 meters, 1600 meters, 3 (nominal) miles, individually timed.

2) Track Events - Outdoors
5k Road Race. All Men and Women start at the same time.

3) Field Events - Outdoors
    Standing Long Jump: Best of three jumps. Feet must be parallel and leave ground at the same time.
    Running Long Jump: Best of three jumps.

    High Jump: A competitor may start at any height above the starting height. Three successive failures to clear the bar at any height disqualifies a competitor. Fewest misses and fewest tries breaks a tie.

    Discus: Women: 50-74: 1 Kg discus; 75+: 3/4 Kg discus, Men 50-59: 1.5 Kg discus; 60+: 1 Kg discus. Best of three attempts. Spinning (rotating the body) is only permitted if an operational safety cage is installed at the venue. NVSO supplies discus.

    Shot Put: Women 50-74: 3 Kg shot, 75+: 2 Kg shot, Men 50-59: 6 Kg shot- 60-69: 5 Kg shot, 70+: 4 Kg shot. Best of three attempts. Spinning (rotating the body) is only permitted if an operational safety cage is installed at the venue. NVSO supplies shots.

    Mini Javelin Throw: Women 50-59: 500 gram (Long Toms), Women 60+: 400 gram (Turbojav); Men 50-59: 700 gram (Long Toms), Men 60-69: 600 gram (Long Toms), Men 70-79: 500 gram (Long Toms), Men 80+: 400 gram (Turbojav). Best of three attempts. NVSO supplies javelins.

Volleyball - Team Competition: Official USAV rules apply with exceptions. Men and Women in 5-year age groups. Game format will depend on the number of teams (most likely a match of 3 games, 1 hour time limit per match.) Teams may provide their own volleyballs.

Yo-Yo: AYYA 2002 Tricks and Rules for Beginner, Novice, and Advanced Divisions. Men’s and Women’s Divisions in 20-year age groups. All tricks performed on first attempt receive 5 points. A successful second attempt, if necessary, receives 3 points. Players use their own yo-yo’s.
