The mission of the Northern Virginia Senior Olympic Committee (NVSO) is to provide senior adults, ages 50 and better, opportunities for participation, competition, self-improvement and fellowship through a wide variety of athletic and recreational events. Through this $10,000 grant, Johns Hopkins Health Plans (JHHP), underscores its intention to improve the health and community well-being of local senior citizens.
“Addressing social determinants of health is not a side effort for us — it’s central to how we fulfill our mission,” ~ Ryan O’Donnell, Chief Operating Officer of Johns Hopkins Health Plans.
NVSO is grateful to be chosen for this honor. It allows both JHHP and NVSO to “raise the bar” enhancing services to the senior community of Northern Virginia. In 2026, NVSO expects to exceed last year’s engagement numbers of 1,200 participants and 250 volunteers. Over 24 days at 34 locations across Northern Virginia, more than 90 events will be held.
“The NVSO is proud to offer an ever-expanding variety of events for local seniors. These events provide exercise, promote mental acuity and encourage socialization summarized in our motto “living healthy longer.” Johns Hopkins Health Plans selection of NVSO for this grant allows more local seniors to participate. We are thankful for this partnership.” ~ Michael Coleman, Chair of NVSO 2026
Looking to the future, NVSO aims to continue, and expand where possible, its efforts regarding our joint goal with JHHP of creating positive opportunities for seniors to stay engaged physically, mentally and socially.
